Heaven

We had a wedding reception on Saturday. When I told my little boys about it, I mentioned that there would be a chocolate fountain. WHAT? You've never seen three little boys so excited. I guess I can understand.

Imagine when you were a kid, wouldn't a fountain of pure chocolate have been an absolute dream? I know it would've for me. I love chocolate, always have. But, when I was growing up, treats were just that-a treat. We didn't have candy very often, and when we did it was the little penny-candy kind. (Yes, I am old enough to remember buying penny candy.) We made most of our sweets. We actually had a great tradition. Every Sunday evening, we would make something. Brownies, cakes, cookies, always from scratch. I learned alot of what I know about cooking from those Sunday nights.

So, even though my kids get treats alot more than I did, a chocolate fountain was still pretty thrilling. When the kids arrived at the reception, the first thing out of their mouths was, "Where's the chocolate fountain?" I told them there would be no chocolate until they hugged the bride and groom. (The bride is their cousin, I wouldn't make them hug someone they didn't know.) That wait in the line was almost unbearable, then they had to wait in line for the food-aaahhh! But, finally, there it was-

delicious, smooth chocolate, and even better, there were things to dip in it- bananas, graham crackers, pretzels and Oreos. Ah, my boys faces said it all. They loaded their plates and dug in. Of course, they made several trips back. They were warned not to touch the chocolate, still I caught my 5 year-old, finger out, poised to put it in the flow. Luckily, I stopped him before he spread his little-boy germs to all the other guests. By the end of the night, he had so much chocolate on him, you'd have thought I had dipped him in. They had a great time, why not? It was kid heaven.

Oh, who am I kidding? It's grown-up-woman heaven, too. I mean really, free-flowing chocolate? You can use whatever exuse you like-PMS, stress, pregnancy- chocolate can make you feel better. If I'd been left alone with the fountain, I probably would've put my fingers in it.

  1. I miss penny candy! We had a store down the street called the Mini Mart. Penny candy heaven! Maybe it's a good thing they don't have that anymore.
I love chocolate and strawberries. YUM! The bride was brave having that at her reception!
