Own It.

If someone asked me if I was a good cook, I would answer quickly, without hesitation. (I might even puff out my chest a bit.) “Heck, yeah, I am.” I have no problem admitting that. None. Yet, if someone asked me if I was a good writer, I’d pause. “Well… other people have said that I am.” Then I’d probably follow up with, “I’m not published or anything.” Why? Why not say what I want to say- “Yes. I am a damn good writer.” (Because I am.) I think there’s too much self-depreciation in our humility. We’re afraid that if we say we’re good at something others will see us as conceited instead of confident. But this kind of humility doesn’t do anyone any good. One of my favorite quotes supports this idea- “We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.”* Perhaps we should ask ourselves what God would think of our false humility. Since He is the One who gave us our gifts, who knows better than anyone ...

Forget-Me-Not

A few weeks ago I was pondering the recent events in my life.  No one gets through without trials and I'm no exception.  But, even with the difficulties, I have had several things happen to me that helped me see how 'watched over' I am. Over the past few months,  I received emails, and had a couple of conversations that were so perfectly timed that I cannot call them chance.  The Lord's hand may be unseen and even unrecognized, but it is there.  Coincidence? I don't believe in it.  What I do believe is that we have a Father in Heaven who loves us and is so completely aware of us that He knows what we need before we do. This assurance was reinforced at the  Relief Society Broadcast a week ago. President Uchtdorf's talk was, in a word, incredible.  I  don't think a single woman listening wouldn't have been touched by his message.  And, will any of us look at a forget-me-not the same way again? The three things that hit me most were- B...

A Bloom of Hope

Something is eating my tulips.  Rude.  I know we have lots of ants and potato bugs-  do those eat plants?  My mother-in-law said it might be snails. Gross. I noticed it a few days ago and was discouraged,  because I've had problems growing flowers here. Then, today, I saw this- They're growing despite the stupid bugs.  They're my inspiration. Ignore the afflictions, whatever is 'eating' you,  and bloom anyway.

Feeling Old

My husband and I were watching The Good Wife. We were talking about how old Michael J. Fox looks. I said, "She's aged much better." meaning Julianna Margulies. Then he said that Michael is older than us, but she is younger. Ok, that made me feel better. Then, curiosity got the best of me. Dang internet! Sometimes it is not a good thing to have so much useless information at your fingertips. She's 2 1/2 months older than me. I hate Hollywood.
