My Un-Bucket List

"Carter and I saw the world together. Which is amazing. When you think that only 3 months ago, we were complete strangers.  I hope that it doesn't sound selfish of me, but... the last months of his life were the best months of mine.  He saved my life... and he knew it before I did." -The Bucket List

Love that movie. I don't have a bucket list, tho' I guess I do in my head.  There are things I hope to do.  But, as I was watching Tom Hanks on David Letterman last night, I realized I have a 'un-bucket' list. Tom was talking about being in Germany and driving the autobahn. I don't even like driving much. Driving fast? No thanks. There are other things I hear people talk about wanting to do that just don't appeal to me. Such as-

Sky diving. I don't know what would happen if you vomit while free-falling at 120mph, but I really don't want to find out.

Climbing Mount Everest. Thousands of dollars, months of preparation to make a climb that might kill you- and at the end you can't even see anything but clouds. Not for me. I've heard someone say they climbed it because it was there. That's my philosophy about cookies.

Swimming with sharks. Really, people? I've already discussed my feelings about large ocean-life. Add rows of teeth and a taste for blood and I'll have to pass.

Meeting someone famous. I don't get this one. What would you say? "Uh, hi. I'm your biggest fan."  OK, Annie Wilkes, let me introduce you to my security. There are lots of people I'd like to meet, most of them aren't all that famous.

Eating exotic foods. I've never even eaten sushi, can't bring myself to. So, eating rocky mountain oysters or goat's head won't be on my menu.

What things do you NOT want to do?

  1. I love this post!! There are very few things that I want to do that can stand up to my life right now. I'm happy to be doing what I'm doing, so I guess that in and of itself is my bucket list. I just love being where I am, does this make me boring?? I think there's alot to be said for contentment!!

  2. I am completely with you on the Everest thing! While I was reading "Into Thin Air" I kept thinking: "How can you enjoy a sport that in all likelihood will kill you?!"

  3. Haha! I hadn't thought of an un-bucket list! I have a list of things I've already accomplished. To kind of..balance out my humongous bucket list. But this list is cool. I can't bring myself to eat sushi either. I really really can't. Maybe one day if we're starving? Maybe.
I have never thought of this and now I've been staring at my screen drawing a blank as to what I don't want to do. Haven't exercised my brain in this direction. Huh.
    I don't want to:
Study Abroad - I can study just as well wherever I am. I believe, or
Move to Europe either. Visiting yes, move there, no. I've done enough country changing. That's just a few ... but who knows..sometimes things we don't exactly want get thrown at us.
    Happy 2012!

  4. Anything pertaining to heights would be on my list! I have no desire to participate in water sports, ruling out triathlons, surfing, scuba diving etc. I have eaten sushi, it's quite good, but am not interested in the more exotic dishes like tongue, rocky mountain oysters and scorpions! Okay I can't handle eaten oysters and muscles either, much to my husbands disappointment.

  5. I'm pretty much with you on all of those things. Except I tried sushi again (after hating it the first time and literally gagging while trying to chew and swallow. Oh and I detest all sea food/fish) and I loved it so much that's where I requested we go for my birthday! :oD I love your philosophy about cookies btw. LOL

  6. I have less desire to actually travel to far away places now. Now that I have internet, high resolution photog, and HD teleBision, its so much like being there, in comfort, and so often from a bird's eye view.

  7. Kerrie- me either! I look at all these runners and think, Why?
Lia- no scuba diving for me, either. Maybe snorkeling, maybe.
Jil, I think that's the best thing ever- to be happy with what you have!

  8. I have swam (snorkeled) with sharks it was AWESOME!!! Although I could only bring myself to touch it with my foot. But I am with you on the sushi thing - no seafood for me. I think generally, I am pretty open to trying new things, until I actually get there, then I tend to chicken out.

  9. Umm....I'd actually love to go sky diving and maybe not climb Mt. Everest to the very top...but I'd love to hang out at base camp. Sushi is my very favorite food. :)
I DON'T want to wrangle snakes...(I HATE snakes with a passion.) Although I'm obsessed with reading about ocean exploration and ship wrecks, I DON'T want to take a submersible down to the Titanic (because I might just die from claustrophobia). I DON'T want to go caving/spelunking (for that same Claustrophobia issue.) And as much as I like to watch it on TV, I DON'T want to compete on "Survivor".

  10. Oh ya! Add anything claustrophobic to my list too!

  11. Deb- Wow! Things I never knew about you, you brave woman!
Sarah- I'm totally with you on the cave thing- no way! Snakes, too.

  12. I really like sushi...Aaron made me do it. I NEVER EVER EVER want to go to the Grand Canyon...I can't even watch people on TV at the Grand Canyon. I am so afraid of falling in..or watching someone else fall in. I've snorkled too...saw a tiny (they said it was harmless) shark and had to swim back to the boat...too many memories of JAWS.

  13. Pretty much everything on your un-list could go on my un-list. I also have never understood the appeal of all these tropical islands everyone wants to be whisked off to--they look great in pictures, but I hate that humid heat that's part of the reality of those locales--and the BUGS! (Mosquito netting is kind of gauzy and exotic looking in its way, but the NEED for mosquito netting is in no way appealing.)

  14. Found my way here through Judy's blog :)

Bungie jumping. No interest. Not a huge desire for sky diving either really, but definitely zero for bungie jumping.

    Let's see... what else...

Joining the Peace Corps. - A bit like the exotic vacations thing. The idea is nice, but I wouldn't do well without air conditioning, indoor plumbing, and familiar foods for an extended period of time. I can go without a lot, but without those I'd decompensate pretty quickly!

Hunting and fishing. Not gonna do it. Give me a radish.

Ironically, I would have been happy to do some of these when I was younger, but not now!
