Leap Blog Day! Guest Post by Nicole

Welcome to Leap Blog Day! Today's guest post is by Nicole (which happens to be the name of her blog.) I hope you enjoy what she wrote, I did, since it's mostly about me. Nicole's blog is filled with her family, her faith, and some really great menu/cooking ideas. I hope, if you have the time, you'll 'hop around' and find some new blogs to read. Enjoy!

A Hawk for Jewels – Some Leap Blog Love from Nicole

So I have been really nervous about the whole Leap Blogger event.  I love leap years, and I like the idea of a whole community of bloggers hopping around and posting for each other.  But it makes me nervous to be a part of the hopping.  So I decided that I would play it safe and type up a post that honored my hostess in some way.  It takes courage to allow a random inter-neighbor a little bit of space on your personal spot on the web.  What if they say something crazy or totally against your grain?  And I’m sometimes scared to rub others the wrong way, which is why I am freaking out right now… okay, so back to my point (heaven forbid, I ramble all over someone else’s blog!)…

My point is that I scoped Jewels out.  I kind of stalked her page and clicked on every tab.  I read a little more about her.  And I saw that she has admitted to being obsessed with hawks.

I take hawks and eagles for granted.  I see them almost every day.  Spoiled me.  In fact, the other day on the drive home, I was chatting to my sister on the phone, and all of the sudden I am stopping in the middle of our driveway because  a hawk took off out of the underbrush, right in front of me.  With a squirrel (ohhhh, sad) in its clutches.  Happy hawk.  Dead squirrel.

No joke, I watched it flap up and over to the nearest alder branch and plop itself down for a quick squirrel snack.  So of course, I jumped out of my car with my phone and took this incredibly bad picture.

No really, it’s a hawk.  Inside that white circle. (sorry. white circle disappeared when I posted this.grr.)

Then I proceeded to take some incredibly bad videos of the hawk gulping down the squirrel and flying off.  My phone also recorded my conversation with my sister, that should have been a duh for me, but it took me a while to realize that this rarely seen moment in nature was destroyed by our silly conversation about the sadness a wildlife videographer (?) must have to go through seeing helpless little animals devoured.  But, it’s a hawk, and since it’s a hawk, I am dedicating all this bad footage to Jewels.

Happy Leap Blog Day to everyone!  And Jewels, I hope you like your “present”.  Sorry that my phone doesn’t have a better zoom, and that I have no idea how to take out my voice and put in orchestrated nature music.

  1. Great job Nicole. I'm sure Jewels appreciates the sincere effort on the photos. And Jewels...I wouldn't have pictured you as a hawk fanatic. :D)
Thanks again for guesting on my blog today!

    1. There is a hawk in the book I've written, and since then, I've become a bit obsessed.

    2. Thank you! We did have some technical difficulties, which required a great deal of patience for Jewels.

  2. The two of you are obviously kindred spirits. Too funny, hawk lovers.

    1. I was taking the video because I knew that my boys would freak out over it. It was hard for me to watch that poor squirrel get chomped... although, I do admit, I like all that nature and animal stuff.

  3. Not a bird fan, exactly, but when we drive past a field of freshly mowed hay and Eagles are perched an every marshmallow bale, waiting for a dinner of tasty (I can only assume based on the number of Eagles in the field) mice, it is pretty awesome!

    1. There's just something a bit more "regal" about a hawk or an eagle. That hawk looked at me like he owned that part of the forest. He knew he could swoop towards me and send me running and screaming for the car if he wanted to!

  4. Our population of both hawks and eagles has increased dramatically in recent years, our eagle sightings are still pretty rare (a few times a year), but the hawks, I can barely leave the house without seeing one. I'm fascinated by birds in general and birds of prey, especially--my kids are so sick of me shouting, "Hawk! Eagle! Kestrel! Osprey!" while we're driving somewhere. My favorite, though, are the owls.

(PS--If had I shot the photo and video for this it would've turned out exactly the same. Glad I'm not the only technologically challenged blogger with a crappy phone camera.)

    1. I've never seen an owl (zoo doesn't count), but I'd love to. I used to laugh at bird watchers, but I could totally see myself, when I'm retired, with a pair of binoculars or a really high-powered camera.

I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Nevertheless just imagine if you added
some great pictures or videos to give your posts more,
"pop"! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos,
this blog could certainly be one of the very best in its niche.
    Superb blog!
