How to Win Friends, But Lose Survivor


My post for today got put off because I was asked to be part of a Google+ hangout with Mom it Forward. So, let me just share a couple thoughts.
I read this book a few years ago. It's great. Mr. Carnegie is infinitley wise. I'd like to drop him onto the Survivor island so he could give the castaways some advice.


“Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn--and most fools do."
You're on Survivor. It's hard. It's meant to be unpleasant. You're gonna be cold and wet and hungry for the entire time you're there. If you thought you'd signed up for the Real Housewives of Fantasy Island, you were wrong. Just. Stop. Complaining.

“When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but with creatures bristling with prejudice and motivated by pride and vanity.” 
Oh, they're bristling all right. I don't think the vanity comes into play, since they're all living without mirrors or showers or toothpaste. But, pride? Yeah, we got pride.

“Actions speak louder than words, and a smile says, ‘I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you.” 
Except on Survivor, where a smile says, "Yes, I hope you trust me, then I can stab you in the back."

I promise to do better with my post about tonight's show. It looks like it'll be a doozy.

    You make me laugh with the Survivor stuff. I have had my own "reality TV" addictions, but I can't sit still through even one episode of Survivor for many of the reasons you mention. I think Mr. Carnegie would have his work cut out for him. I do love that book, though. I know it is much maligned, but I think that might be by people who haven't actually read it. Thanks for the giggle, Julie!

    That's one of the books I've always meant to read--I've only ever skimmed it while stocking it on the shelves of the bookstore where I worked.

    I want to check out the Google+ thing, but I am at work on an unplanned overnight shift with no headphones in my very echoey office in a houseful of sleeping men so audio is out of the question, at the moment. I will mark it on my bloggy to-do list. ;)

    We're behind on our DVR'ed Survivors because we're in the throes of Breaking Bad. But can't wait to catch up with you!

Seeing Myself As I Am

Last weekend I went out with some friends. Beautiful, intelligent, caring women who have recently become a part of my life. I'd been looking forward to this night for weeks . We met, we hugged, we gushed over how good it was to be together again. We sat and in-between talking, ordered, and, somehow consumed, good food. We caught up on our lives and discussed future plans-new homes, campaigns, travel and children. It was glorious. Simply glorious. At the end of the night, as we began, reluctantly, to say our good-byes, everyone whipped out their phones for pictures. We flashed and snapped our happy faces.
