Bridge Over Troubled Water

I've been sailing along for a while, enjoying the smooth, glassy surface of the water. I'd put my head back, feeling the sun on my face. So caught up, I was, in the tranquility, I failed to notice the warning, the gathering clouds, the distant rumble of thunder.  To me, the storm seemed to come from nowhere.

Suddenly, I found myself among choppy waves and rain stung my face.  The wind stole my breath and threatened to tip me over completely. Tossed to and fro, I was unable to see the shore, or anything, other than the clouds that surrounded me. All I could do was hold on and pray for calmer weather.

When you're weary
Feelin small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all

I love this song. Always have. I recently found a version of it on youtube and have listened to it everyday. It has brought me much peace.

I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

As I have struggled, I have felt the comfort of knowing that I am not alone. There is One who cares and truly understands my trials.  I believe that the Savior not only took upon Himself our sins, but also all our pains and troubles. This gives Him a completely unique perspective and empathy.  I have felt Him near and known that He loves me and is there for me.

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

What I love about this song is that the bridge can be so many different things. It can be God, or a friend, or family.  It can even be something you hear or read that comes at the perfect moment, that seems to be put there just for you.  Whatever it is, it brings you comfort and hope.

My favorite part of the song-

Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind

Sometimes that's all I need. Someone to remind me that my life is shiny, that my dreams are on their way, that there is a better day coming.  That gentle reminder  is the bridge I need to carry me over the water, where I can put my feet on solid ground and bask in the light of the rising sun.

  1. Wonderful post and I'm loving this Josh version of the song. Thank you for sharing!

  2. Oh, Oh! Now Brian is singing! This just keeps getting better!

    1. I know, right? I told my husband that I wished I could get it as a MP3 download. He said I could get the Simon and Garfunkle version. But, I want THIS one.

  3. I have always loved this song as well--for all the reasons you mentioned. No matter what state of mind I'm in when I hear it, I am calmed and soothed by the time it's over.

    1. Me, too. I love that it's a very universal message, one we all need.

  4. Always loved this song, but Josh Groban too??? Good heavens, how have I not heard this before?? (I am ridiculously obsessed with JG...I even have a t-shirt.) Thank you for sharing!

  5. Nobody does it like Simon and Garfunkel :) (Although I do love Josh!)

  6. Always been a big fan of this song, of Simon and Garfunkel AND now Josh Groban! Love it. Kowhai calls herself a Grobanite. I'll have to show this to her, I wish he'd do it for iTunes!

Also, have you heard Josh's song, Galileo? It's my favorite at the moment.

  7. Ok so I think I may be the only person on the planet that isn't too keen on this song. I am however very glad that it is your reminder that things are shiny.
